Making Steel Buildings Usable
Shop, barn and metal building insulation is a big share of our work around Sweetwater, where farms, ranches and oilfield businesses depend on steel buildings. Uninsulated steel gets very hot in the sun, cools quickly at night, and drips condensation onto tools, feed and equipment on cold mornings. A coat of closed-cell foam on the panels fixes all three problems at once.
Why closed cell
Closed-cell foam bonds directly to steel, fills panel ribs and fastener gaps, and slows vapor so moist air never reaches the cold metal. HomeGuide rates it at R-5 to R-7 per inch. It also stiffens thin panels and dampens rain and hail noise. Open-cell foam is cheaper but lets vapor pass, so in a steel building it usually needs an interior liner and a moisture plan.
Wind and steel
Wind pushes air through every gap at the eaves, ridge and base of a metal building. In a shop you want to heat or cool, that leakage wastes most of the effort. Foam seals those gaps along with insulating. We also point out where door seals and base trim would help.
Matching the job to the building
A hay or equipment barn may only need the roof done to stop drip. A shop you work in year-round needs roof, walls and end walls. A barndominium shell needs the steel walls and roof foamed before interior framing goes up, and the living space treated like a house. We ask how you use the building before quoting.
Before we spray
We check for rust, leaking roof screws and sagging old faced fiberglass, which usually has to come down so foam can bond to the steel. Equipment gets moved or covered. Roof leaks get fixed first.
Codes
Whether a shop or barn needs a permit or must meet energy code depends on how it is used and where it sits. Living space and conditioned workshops are treated differently from farm buildings. Check with your city or county before converting a barn into living space.

Shop, Barn & Metal Building Insulation Questions
Does spray foam stop condensation in a metal barn?
Yes. Closed-cell foam keeps moist air away from the cold steel, which is what causes the drip.
Can foam go over the old fiberglass in my shop?
Usually the old faced fiberglass has to come down so foam can bond to the steel.
Do you insulate barndominiums?
Yes. We foam the steel shell and can insulate the interior living space.
How thick should foam be on steel?
It depends on use. Stopping drip takes less than a fully conditioned shop. The quote lists thickness.
