Cold Floors Start Underneath
Pier-and-beam floor insulation addresses a problem in older raised homes around Sweetwater: cold floors and drafts in winter. A house on piers has an open or vented space under the floor. Wind blows through it, and the floor above often has no insulation at all, plus gaps around plumbing, the band joist and wall bottoms. Insulating and sealing the underside of the floor makes a noticeable difference.
Closed-cell foam under the floor
Closed-cell foam sprayed on the underside of the subfloor, between the joists, and along the band joist seals and insulates in one step. It does not take on water, so it holds up in a space that sees dust, humidity and the occasional wet spell. The 2015 code table Texas uses lists R-19 for floors in Zone 3, and ENERGY STAR suggests R-19 for floors in existing Zone 3 homes.
Batts as an option
Fiberglass batts held tight to the subfloor with supports are a lower-cost option. They need a good air barrier and careful installation so they do not sag or fall, and they do not seal the gaps the way foam does. We price both when both are reasonable.
Plumbing
Pipes under a raised floor are exposed to cold air. Insulating the floor from below can leave pipes on the cold side, so we look at where they run and recommend pipe insulation or other protection as needed. In a hard freeze, a pipe on the cold side of new insulation still needs attention.
Access and condition
Some crawl spaces are low and tight. We check access, look for standing water, pest activity, damaged wood and old debris before quoting. Problems get fixed first.
Sealed crawl spaces
In some homes, sealing the crawl space and insulating its walls instead of the floor makes sense, especially if ducts run down there. It is a bigger project and changes how the space is ventilated. We explain the trade-offs if it applies to your house.

Pier-and-Beam Floor Insulation Questions
What R-value should a raised floor have?
The 2015 code table lists R-19 for floors in Zone 3, and ENERGY STAR suggests R-19 for floors in existing Zone 3 homes.
Will insulating the floor freeze my pipes?
It can leave pipes on the cold side, so we recommend pipe insulation or protection where needed.
Is foam better than batts under a floor?
Foam seals air and does not sag, but costs more. Batts can work with good supports and an air barrier.
What if my crawl space is very low?
We check access first. Some spaces need extra prep or a different method.
