Depth Without the Foam Price

Blown-in attic insulation is the most economical way to bring most Sweetwater attics up to a solid R-value. A machine blows loose fiberglass or cellulose through a hose, and it spreads into an even blanket that fills around joists, wires and fixtures. On top of a sealed ceiling, it delivers a lot of performance for the cost.

Choosing the material

Loose-fill fiberglass is light, resists moisture and settles very little. Cellulose, made from recycled paper treated for fire resistance, is denser and slows air movement through the layer a bit more. Fixr lists blown fiberglass at $1.65 to $2.60 per square foot and cellulose at $1.75 to $3.80. Both work in a sealed attic, and we recommend one based on your attic and existing material.

The right depth

Nolan County is Climate Zone 3. ENERGY STAR suggests R-49 for a bare attic and adding R-38 where three to four inches exist; the 2015 code lists R-38 for new ceilings. We set depth markers so you can see the installed depth matches the quote.

Why sealing comes first

Loose fill slows heat but lets air pass through. In a windy place, air moving through open gaps in the ceiling carries heat and dust right through new insulation. That is why every blown-in job we quote starts with air sealing.

Walls

In older homes with empty wall cavities, cellulose or fiberglass can be dense-packed through small holes, then patched. It fills cavities that hold nothing now, without tearing out interior walls.

Top up or start over

If existing insulation is dry and reasonably even, new fill goes on top. If it is wet, contaminated or crushed, we recommend removing it first. We tell you which during the visit.
